Maine-born Union major general (1828–1914) who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his defense of Little Round Top at Gettysburg. Choice bank check, shortly after the Civil War, 7.25 x 2.75, neatly filled out and signed by Chamberlain, “J. L. Chamberlain,” payable to E. Colby for $42.63, Aug 26, 1867. The check bears an affixed two-cent revenue stamp. In very fine condition.
Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (September 8, 1828 – February 24, 1914) was an American college professor from Maine who volunteered during the American Civil War to join the Union Army. He became a highly respected and decorated Union officer, reaching the rank of brigadier general (and brevet major general).
