CARNEGIE, Andrew. An American Four-in-Hand in Britain. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1891. Hardcover 7.5 x 5.25, original red cloth, gilt, and black stamped vignette of a horse-shoe around a horse's head on the front cover, spine lettered in gilt. Later printing. Inscribed presentation copy, signed by Andrew Carnegie on the dedication page: "To Lady Margaret De La Warr, with every good wish, Andrew Carnegie, Buckhurst, July 2, 1894."

Carnegie (1835-1919) was an American businessman and philanthropist, who made his fortune in the steel industry and later contributed back to the arts (including the foundation of Carnegie Hall in New York), built and founded various institutions and universities, and the Carnegie Hero Fund. This copy belonged to Lady Margaret De La Warr [Margaret Sackville] (1881-1963), the daughter of the 7th Earl De La Warr, and noted poet and children's author who joined the anti-war, Union of Democratic Control in 1914. Her book The Pagent of War (1916), included the poem Nostra Culpa, denouncing women who betrayed their sons by not speaking out. Her aunt, Muriel De La Warr, and her uncle, Herbrand Sackville, ninth Earl De La Warr, were also involved in the peace movement. Her brother, the 8th Earl De La Warr, was killed in the conflict in 1915. Rubberstamp in red of a circled tea kettle on the front free endpaper. Originally published in 1883.
