David D. Porter 7.75" x 10" LS. In the letter, David D. Porter regarding the USS Monticello and USS Montgomery and a possible chase with the CSS Tallahassee. The letter is dated November 4th and signed "David D. Dixon". The ships began patrolling the coast from Washington to Cape Fear River in November, and on the 8th had a running fight with the CSS Tallahassee, just 4 days after this LS. Very slight staining but in otherwise fine condition.
David Dixon Porter (June 8, 1813 – February 13, 1891) was a United States Navy admiral and a member of one of the most distinguished families in the history of the U.S. Navy. Promoted as the second U.S. Navy officer ever to attain the rank of admiral, after his adoptive brother David G. Farragut, Porter helped improve the Navy as the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy after significant service in the American Civil War.
