Albert Schweitzer (January 14, 1875 - September 4, 1965), German/French theologian and Nobel Peace Prize winner, collection of vintage paper ephemera. An organist, philosopher, physician and philanthropist, Schweitzer is perhaps best known for his work in Gabon, Africa in 1912, where he committed to serving as a medical doctor in the Paris Missionary Society's mission at Lambaréné on the Ogooué river. There, he and his wife established the Albert Schweitzer Hospital and proceeded to treat nearly 2,000 patients within the first nine months. In 1952, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of "Reverence for Life, " which was Schweitzer's take on universal ethics: "Ethics is nothing other than Reverence for Life. Reverence for Life affords me my fundamental principle of morality, namely, that good consists in maintaining, assisting and enhancing life, and to destroy, to harm or to hinder life is evil." Boasting an impressive list of publications, musical compositions and humanitarian efforts, Schweitzer was referred to as ' "the greatest man in the world" in a 1947 issue of Life magazine.

This remarkable collection of Schweitzer ephemera includes two vintage photographs, images of Schweitzer and Charles R. Joy in Africa; "A Treasury of Albert Schweitzer" and "Albert Schweitzer - An Anthology," ." both signed and dated by Joy, and 78 pages of an original manuscript for "Self-Portrait," translated by Joy. Collection hails from the estate of Schweitzer's long-time associate and editor, Charles R. Joy. This collection is in overall fine condition, with the expected wear to the reading materials.
