ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. TLS dated December 17, on White House letterhead. It was during TR’s administration that the term “White House” replaced “Executive Mansion”. The letter was to Mrs. Nellie Grant Sartoris, daughter of President U.S. Grant expressing profound sympathy. Mrs. Sartoris’ mother, former first lady Julia Dent Grant, had died three day earlier. Nellie was married in the Executive Mansion in 1874 in a spectacular wedding. With a Scott Kiefer print of Sagamore Hill, Theodore Roosevelt’s home.
