GARFIELD, JAMES A. DS JUNE 16, 1881, appointing Daniel P. Foley Third Lieutenant in the Revenue Service of the United States. Also signed by William Windom, Secretary of the Treasury. Accompanied by a letter to the consignor from John M. Taylor, a noted manuscript collector and author who wrote a Garfield biography. He states, “Your Garfield is a real beauty, and is one whose existence I had not known. For whatever it may be worth, I think that commissions such as yours are one of the rarest forms of Garfield’s presidential autograph. If you recall, the Senate was at loggerheads with Garfield for most of his brief term, so little was acted on which required Senate consent.” A real gem. Also included is a Scott Kiefer print of Lawnfield, Garfield’s home.
