TLS signed "Josephine," one page, 8.25 x 11.5, August 12, 1974. Baker replies to Hank Kaufman's proposal to film her autobiography. With a few faint stains and a very small smudge to the signature. The page has rips and scattered creasing, mainly seen along the top edge. The page also has fold lines but is in otherwise fine condition.
In part: "Although I appreciate….. your great desire to make a film on my life, I think it's very, very important for me to repeat that all of your efforts must be personal……I'm sorry….but having had such.….unpleasant experience with some American businessmen…I am thus on my guard……Josephine."
Josephine Baker (3 June 1906 – 12 April 1975) was an American-born French entertainer, French Resistance agent, and civil rights, activist. Her career was centered primarily in Europe, mostly in her adopted France. She was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 silent film Siren of the Tropics, directed by Mario Nalpas and Henri Étiévant.
