John James Audubon (1785-1851), whose monumental "Birds of America" remains one of the most celebrated illustrated works in the history of natural history and American art, is represented here by a clipped signature in bold black ink on a pale blue paper strip. The signature reads "Jno. J. Audubon" in his confident, sweeping hand, with a flourishing paraph below. The clip is mounted on cream card stock.
Audubon signatures in any form are genuinely rare on the market. He was a tireless traveler and observer rather than a prolific correspondent, and the combination of his scientific importance, his artistic genius, and the relative scarcity of his material makes even a clipped signature a meaningful acquisition for collectors of Americana, natural history, or American art.
Clipped signature, black ink on pale blue paper strip, approximately 4 x 1.25 inches, mounted on cream card stock (IMG_219.jpg). Light toning consistent with age; signature bold and fully legible; overall very good condition. Estimate: $1,200-$2,000.
