Historic Mediterranean Scalloped Top ship's passport signed by President John Adams and Secretary of State Timothy Pickering, authorizing safe passage for the brig Eliza of Warren, commanded by William Champlin. Issued on October 26, 1799, this partially printed document features a dramatic nautical vignette at top depicting a lighthouse and ships at sea. The passport grants the Eliza freedom to carry goods and passengers undisturbed by foreign powers.
Adams’s large signature as President appears at lower center, with a cancellation punch once affecting the signature—expertly repaired. The U.S. seal remains affixed at lower left, with countersignatures completed in Newport, Rhode Island.
Framed with an engraved portrait of Adams, the document measures 12" x 18", attractively displayed in a red mat and gold-tone frame to a size of 26.5" x 27.25".
