Signed by President James Monroe and countersigned by Josiah Meigs as Commissioner of the General Land Office. Embellished with an engraved vignette of a soldier receiving a land grant beneath the motto "Militi Forti Et Fideli" and a crest of James Monroe in the matting above. The document measures 9.5" x 13" and is framed to an overall size of 16.5" x 20".
James Monroe (April 28, 1758 – July 4, 1831) was an American statesman, lawyer, diplomat, and Founding Father who served as the fifth president of the United States from 1817 to 1825, a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. He was the last Founding Father to serve as president as well as the last president of the Virginia dynasty and the Republican Generation. He is best known for issuing the Monroe Doctrine, a policy of limiting European colonialism in the Americas. Previously he served as governor of Virginia, a member of the United States Senate, U.S. ambassador to France and Britain, the seventh secretary of state, and the eighth secretary of war.
