A rare and poignant autograph of President James A. Garfield, signed just two weeks before he was mortally wounded. The large, flowing signature, “James A. Garfield,” appears on an album page and is dated in his hand “June 17, 1881.” Given that Garfield was shot on July 2 and died later that summer, this is almost certainly among his final autographs signed while in office.

The signed sheet measures approximately 3 by 6 inches and is neatly matted below an engraved full-length portrait of Garfield. The piece is presented in a red mat and frame, measuring approximately 14.5 by 23 inches overall.

A moving and historically significant display from the 20th President of the United States, whose presidency was tragically cut short.

James Garfield (November 19, 1831 – September 19, 1881) was the 20th president of the United States, serving from March 1881 until his assassination in September 1881. A lawyer and Civil War general, Garfield served nine terms in the United States House of Representatives and was the only sitting member of the House to be elected president. Before his candidacy for the presidency, he had been elected to the U.S. Senate by the Ohio General Assembly—a position he declined when he became president-elect.
