Gorky was a Russian author of novels, plays and an autobiography. He first achieved success with "Sketches and Stories" and many of his novels deal with poor and outcast people. He was involved in the failed 1905 Revolution, and fled the country until 1914. In his lifetime, he was honored by the Communists as an outstanding novelist and a promoter of social realism.
This image of Maxim Gorky visually characterizes the Russian playwright and novelist as a throwback to his countryman Rasputin, and delivers an equivalent degree of intensity. This 3 - 3/8 x 5-3/8, black and white photographic postcard made in Gorky's native Russia, captures the face of the great writer as a young man and has been signed by Gorky in wide Cyrillic characters from the broad tip of a black fountain pen (grading "10". The card itself is VG/EX with natural breaks in its gloss and minor flaws that do not atlect the central image. An extremely rare signature example, projecting vividly trom the surface of a crystal clear postcard.
