Incredible Apollo 12 Flown American Flag Personally Carried to the Moon by Alan Bean, with Provenance to Clark McClelland and Signed Presentation Letter
A remarkable artifact from the Apollo 12 mission: a 6" x 4" American flag with gold fringe, flown to the Moon aboard the second lunar landing mission and returned by Lunar Module Pilot Alan L. Bean. The flag itself bears a small return address label for McClelland sewn to the reverse.
The flag is accompanied by an extraordinary suite of provenance materials, including a signed presentation letter from Bean dated October 15, 1971, on official NASA letterhead, in which he confirms the flag’s journey to the lunar surface. Bean’s heartfelt note thanks NASA employee Clark McClelland for his key contributions to the Apollo 12 patch design and notes that carrying the flags was “a pleasure.” Also included is an original color 8" x 10" NASA Manned Spacecraft Center official portrait of Alan Bean, inscribed and signed to McClelland.
Alan Bean (March 15, 1932 – May 26, 2018) was an American naval officer and aviator, aeronautical engineer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut; he was the fourth person to walk on the Moon. He was selected to become an astronaut by NASA in 1963 as part of Astronaut Group 3.
