Real estate and railroad entrepreneur and president of the Standard Oil Company (1830–1913) who set out to make Florida the ‘Newport of the South’ by providing extensive rail access and grand hotels to lure wealthy vacationers. Engraved DS, signed “H. M. Flagler,” one page on both sides, 15" x 7.5", May 17th, 1897. A green stock certificate, featuring a vignette of the US Capitol, for 10 Shares of Standard Oil Trust, signed “H. M. Flagler” as secretary. The transfer stub remains affixed to the left. A machine cancellation over the signature, but does not affect bold signature by Flagler, light toning from adhesive along the left edge, and expected folds, otherwise fine condition.
Henry Flagler (January 2, 1830 – May 20, 1913) was an American industrialist and a founder of Standard Oil, which was first based in Ohio. He was also a key figure in the development of the Atlantic coast of Florida and founder of the Florida East Coast Railway. He is also known as a founder of the cities of Miami and Palm Beach, Florida.
