A fine autograph letter signed “Franklin Pierce”, one page, 7.75 x 9.75 inches, Concord, N.H., November 1, 1862, regarding the presentation and renewal of a financial note. In full:

“My dear Sir,

Our friend [Brown] was absent yesterday and hence I could not present to him the note, for reasons which he will understand. The limitation had better be waived when the note rather than a new note given— I enclose the note in this.

Very truly, Franklin Pierce”

An elegant handwritten letter by the 14th President of the United States, written during the Civil War from his home in Concord. Though out of office since 1857, Pierce remained active in legal and financial affairs, often handling matters for friends and associates in New Hampshire.

Expected light mailing folds; minor adhesive remnants from prior mounting along the edges; and a small area of paper loss along the right margin, affecting nothing of the text. Paper remains lightly toned, the ink bold, and Pierce’s signature strong.

Franklin Pierce (November 23, 1804 – October 8, 1869) was the 14th president of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. A northern Democrat who believed that the abolitionist movement was a fundamental threat to the nation's unity, he alienated anti-slavery groups by signing the Kansas–Nebraska Act and enforcing the Fugitive Slave Act. Conflict between North and South continued after Pierce's presidency, and, after Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, the Southern states seceded, resulting in the American Civil War.
