Francoise Gilot (1921-2023), painter, memoirist, and the only companion ever to leave Pablo Picasso on her own terms, signed this celebrated black-and-white photograph depicting one of the most famous images in the iconography of modern art. The photograph shows Gilot striding confidently along a beach in a wide-brimmed straw hat and summer dress, with Picasso holding a fringed parasol over her head and a third figure following behind. She has signed boldly in black ink at the lower left: "Francoise Gilot." Gilot's 1964 memoir "Life with Picasso" remains one of the most revealing books ever written about the artist, and her own career as a painter earned serious critical respect entirely independent of her famous companion. She lived to 101, and signed photographs from this iconic image carry the double weight of her own remarkable life and her unique proximity to the 20th century's greatest artist. Signed photograph, black ink, approximately 4 x 6.5 inches, undated (IMG_211.jpg). Minor handling wear at borders; image strong and clean; overall very good condition. Estimate: $600-$1,000. This item will be accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from One of a Kind Collectibles.
