Francois-Rene Chateaubriand (1768-1848), double-side folded sheet, Paris, 20 October 1816. This fascinating letter written by François-René de Chateaubriand in French is dated October 20, 1816. The letter comes during the Bourbon Restoration (1814–1830), a turbulent period when France was trying to stabilize after the fall of Napoleon. The Charter of 1814 aimed to balance royal authority with limited constitutional governance. As a prominent royalist and intellectual, Chateaubriand supported the monarchy but was critical of its failure to uphold the moral and constitutional ideals he championed.

Translated: letter was to..

The Count of Tréville,
Knight of Saint-Louis, Chief Colonel of the General Staff of the National Guard of the Department of Aude, in Castelnaudary.

Paris, October 20, 1816

Count,

I do not dare flatter myself that my latest work has produced the favorable effect with which you honor me. I must, no doubt, attribute this judgment to your indulgence. You may have found in my modest writing some sentiments that align with the noble idea of the State, and that may have misled you. I am convinced that the Charter could save us if its implementation were entrusted to pure hands; but you know, Count, how... give you this, for another royalty!
There is no way to escape the world.
Please accept my admiration and the assurance of the high regard with
which I have the honor to be,

Count,

Your very humble and obedient servant,

Chateaubriand

François-René de Chateaubriand (1768–1848) was a prominent French writer, diplomat, historian, and politician. He is widely considered one of the founding figures of French Romanticism and one of the most influential literary and political thinkers of the 19th century.
