PRESIDENTS--1845.) Engraved invitation to James K. Polk's 1845 inaugural ball at Carusi's Saloon. Engraved invitation with portrait of Polk, 5 1/2 x 8 inches, on coated white card stock, completed in manuscript for invitee Ms. Judson; light scratches, minimal dampstaining on left edge. [Washington, 4 March 1845]

Two rival inauguration balls were held for Polk on 4 May 1845, with this one regarded as the more aristocratic of the two. Among the board of managers were numerous prominent political figures, including Levi Woodbury, future president James Buchanan, Thomas H. Benton, Stephen Douglass, and John C. Calhoun. Tickets were sold to the public in advance. Polk managed to attend both events. Rare example.
