Dwight D. Eisenhower Signed White House Letter to George P. Brett, Jr., May 8, 1953, Framed with Portrait

Typed letter signed, “Dwight D. Eisenhower,” one page, 6.5 x 8.25, The White House, Washington stationery, May 8, 1953. Addressed to Mr. George P. Brett, Jr., President of The Macmillan Company, New York, and marked “Personal.” In full, Eisenhower writes: “I have enjoyed glancing at the ‘Story of the Presidents’ by Maud and Miska Petersham. Thank you very much for making it available to me — and to the grandchildren. They should be up to enjoying it themselves in a few years.” Signed in bold black ink beneath a closing of “With appreciation, Sincerely,” during the first year of his presidency.

The recipient, George Platt Brett, Jr., was the influential head of Macmillan Publishing, the firm responsible for numerous major literary successes in the early twentieth century. Eisenhower’s warm note reflects both his personal side as a grandfather and his connection to prominent figures in American publishing. Dated just months after his January 1953 inauguration, the letter offers an early glimpse into the tone and temperament of the new administration.

The letter shows a horizontal fold and light toning consistent with age, and is attractively double-matted and framed alongside a portrait of Eisenhower. An appealing presidential display piece combining a White House signature with presentation.
