American naval officer (1780-1843) who led the first capture of a British vessel during the War of 1812 and who later served as commander-in-chief of the Mexican Navy.

Two ADS, signed D. Porter, 1817-1818. Two manuscript advertisements intended for newspaper publication, one (three pages on two sheets) for passage on an "elegant boat being now in compleat order between the upper part of Georgetown and Alexandria," the other for "eight excellent workhorses ... to be sold cheap." Accompanied by a 19th-century portrait engraving. Intersecting mailing folds (lightly touching one signature), mild toning and soiling, a few marginal chips (seal-related marginal loss to horse letter), and faint show-through behind signature of horse letter, otherwise fine condition.
