Important letter dated March 24, 1870, On navy Department letterhead, in reference to assisting with the ship in part...

"for the purpose of taking on board six commissioners senators and members of Congress to Saint Domingo to examine into the treaty lately made. It will be necessary to have temporary staterooms put up on the gun deck for their accommodation.

I have directed Mr. Lenthol to prepare the plans and put up these staterooms 7 feet long and in the width of those in the cabin and fitted with all the comforts necessary for such an occasion.  This will necessarily necessitate the removal of your two after guns which you can land if you think proper as I supposed to ship to admit of any more weight in her bows.

You will please make preparations to sail so that you can start the moment the commissioners are ready to proceed.

There will be an appropriation by Congress for the expense of these commissioners while on board and the President desires that they shall have every comfort and convenience.

I suppose they will be about 12 days on the passage to St. Domingo and 12 days on the return and they remain one month on the island so you can make your list of stores and have them ready in case they should go.

The Department leaves all of these arrangements to you trusting they will be perfect, that the commissioners will return well satisfied with their intercourse with the Navy. Very respectfully David D Porter for Secretary of Navy"

The letter is to Commodore J. F. Green commanding an S Squadron of Atlantic fleet.
