CLIFFORD K. BERRYMAN (1869–1949), Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist of The Washington Evening Star whose 1902 'Drawing the Line in Mississippi' cartoon inspired the Teddy Bear. Original pen-and-ink cartoon for the Citizens' Military Training Camps (CMTC): soldiers march past with the flag and the CMTC banner while Berryman's trademark little bear asks a slouching youth "Isn't it wonderful what it can do for a fellow?" Inscribed "To my friend Wm. Giblin Esq., who keeps step with the march of real progress – C. K. Berryman, The Evening Star, May 29, 1939, Washington D.C."
