New York, November 15 [n.y.]. Autograph letter signed “C. A. Arthur,” one page, 4.25 x 6.75 in., written on personal stationery from 123 Lexington Avenue, featuring an embossed eagle crest with the Latin motto “Impelle Obstantia.”

Addressed to Hon. I. I. Hayes (likely the noted Arctic explorer Isaac Israel Hayes), Arthur writes a brief note arranging a meeting for the following afternoon:

“It will give me pleasure to see you here at 5 o’clock tomorrow afternoon—if convenient to yourself.”

A fine handwritten note in Arthur’s elegant script, showcasing his characteristic formality and polished hand. Very lightly soiled with expected folds, otherwise fine, with a bold and attractive signature.

Chester A. Arthur (October 5, 1829– November 18, 1886) was the 21st president of the United States, serving from 1881 to 1885. He was a Republican from New York who previously served as the 20th vice president under President James A. Garfield. Assuming the presidency after Garfield's assassination, Arthur's presidency saw the largest expansion of the U.S. Navy and the end of the so-called "spoils system".
