Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), the Danish-French Impressionist patriarch whose influence on Monet, Cezanne, and Gauguin earned him the informal title "father of Impressionism," writes from his home in Eragny to a Monsieur Marty. The ALS, dated 10 December 1894, reads in full: "Eragny par Gisors / Eragny / 10 Dec 1894 / Cher Monsieur Marty / Vous seriez bien aimable de me retenir un Almanach d'Emile Verhaeren et Theo van Rysselberghe qui vient de paraitre et dont vous etes vendeur parait-il a Paris. je voudrais avoir l'exemplaire sur Japon a 20f. recevez cher Monsieur Marty mes amicales Salutations. / C. Pissarro."
The letter asks Marty to reserve the deluxe Japanese-paper edition of the almanac produced by Emile Verhaeren and Theo van Rysselberghe — artists in Pissarro's immediate circle. The specific request for the "exemplaire sur Japon" at 20 francs reveals Pissarro as a discerning collector of fine-press material.
