Finely executed 19th-century handwritten bill of exchange dated June 20, 1846, drawn in Montreal by Gilman & Co. on the prominent Liverpool shipping and timber firm Rankin, Gilmour & Co. The draft, issued at ninety days’ sight, orders payment of £450 sterling to Messrs. John Auld & Co. or their order “for value received,” and bears the intricate printed and calligraphic flourishes characteristic of mid-Victorian commercial paper. The left border features an elaborate engraved design surrounding the denomination “3rd,” denoting it as the third of a triplicate set.

Measuring 4.25" x 9.25", the document remains in very good condition with light fold lines, minor age toning, and scattered faint handling marks. An attractive example of early Canadian-British mercantile exchange linking Montreal and Liverpool during the height of transatlantic trade.
