Vintage glossy 9 x 7.25 photo of Howard Hughes posing alongside John S. Lodwick, Albert Lodwick, and Chicago Mayor Edward Kelly shortly after Hughes's around the world flight, signed in fountain pen, "Howard Hughes," and signed and inscribed "Albert I. Lodwick, Congratulations, lots of luck, John S. Lodwick," and "To Albert I. Lodwick, With best wishes, Edward J. Kelly, Mayor of Chicago." In very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges, and some orange staining to the bottom left.
The photo is accompanied with an 8" x 12" silk American Flag, which was carried on the flight for marketing purposes. Both the signed photo and the Flag originated from Hughes’ flight operations manager, Al Lodwick, who was responsible for mapping the route, making contact with government officials and airport managers to ensure that Hughes would be allowed to land, and arranging for refueling and repairs as necessary. Stops were made in Paris, Moscow, Takutsk (Siberia) and Fairbanks, before the return to a homecoming parade in New York. The flight coupled as an extensive marketing campaign for the New York World’s Fair and the progress of aviation science in the US, and Al Lodwick documented all of the spirited receptions.
Hughes flew around the world in 1938 in a then-record time of three days, 19 hours, and 14 minutes. Albert Lodwick was an aviation enthusiast and Curtiss-Wright Corporation businessman who served as Hughes's flight operations manager during his historic adventure; his organizational skills are highly credited for the success of Hughes's endeavor.
