Manuscript DS as president, one page both sides, 10.75 x 15.5, July 5, 1854. Pierce issues a pardon to James Shields, “convicted of Larceny and sentenced to be confined in the penitentiary, for a period of one year and six months: and.... whereas it has been made satisfactorily to appear to me that the prisoner is a fit subject for Executive clemency. Now, therefore, be it known that I, Franklin Pierce…do hereby grant unto him…a full and unconditional pardon.” Signed on the reverse by Pierce and countersigned by Secretary of State William Marcy. In very good condition, does look to have separation along horizontal middle fold, scattered toning. Not examined out of frame. The white seal is lightly toned, but intact and fine dark signatures. Full presidential pardons signed by Pierce are quite uncommon, as he issued only 142 during his term. Matted and framed with glass on both sides.
