Rare ALS from Morris to a close friend Charles Rowley who was a British socialist and councillor of Ancoats, Manchester. He was inspired by William Morris, a good friend, and a leading member of the Ancoats Brotherhood. In addition to founding public exhibitions and flower shows, he initiated concerts given at the city's parks; this work is amongst the earliest examples of orchestral concerts given for the public's benefit.
Morris writes about a lecture that Rawley wants and states in the letter “ I’m growing older I don’t find myself growing stronger”. Written on his Kelmscott House Stationary dated August 26th. Letter in full: Dear Sir, Many thanks for your kind invitation, but I am sorry to say I cannot engage myself anymore at present, as my list is very full. I am Dear Sir, Yours faithfully William Morris".
The letter is in fine condition but does have a diagonal line crossed through the letter. Morris is quite rare in handwritten and signed letters. size 5"x 8"
William Morris (24 March 1834 – 3 October 1896) was a British textile designer, poet, novelist, translator, and socialist activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts Movement. He was a major contributor to the revival of traditional British textile arts and methods of production. His literary contributions helped to establish the modern fantasy genre, while he helped win acceptance of socialism in fin de siècle Great Britain.
