Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal, knowing that ye also have a Master in Heaven.' Reverend Thornwell, a staunch defender of slavery not only defended the system, but defined the argument in the most extreme terms, calling the abolitionists 'atheists, socialists, communists, red republicans, [and] Jacobins' while the slave-owners were the 'friends of order and regulated freedom.' 1850 was the year of the Compromise, and a few months after this sermon was preached, the Fugitive Slave Law went into effect.
