Interesting Handwritten and signed letter in which Poinsett is talking about an appointment and that he talked with the Secretary of Treasury and that it is not in his practice to get involved with these types of appointments and believe it should be left to the collectors. Joel Roberts Poinsett (March 2, 1779 – December 12, 1851) was an American physician and diplomat. He was the first U.S. agent in South America, a member of the South Carolina legislature and the United States House of Representatives, the first United States Minister to Mexico, a Unionist leader in South Carolina during the Nullification Crisis, Secretary of War under Martin Van Buren, and a co-founder of the National Institute for the Promotion of Science and the Useful Arts (a predecessor of the Smithsonian Institution). Manuscript letter signed: "John B. Floyd"Buchanan's Secretary of War, 1p, 7¾x9¾. War Department, July 7th, 1854. Letter realted to business dealings. John Buchanan Floyd (June 1, 1806 – August 26, 1863) was the 31st Governor of Virginia, U.S. Secretary of War, and the Confederate general in the American Civil War who lost the crucial Battle of Fort Donelson.
