Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey (1737-1791) who is also known as the designer of the first official American flag. Revolutionary War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “F. Hopkinson,” one page, 8.25 x 3.5, March 1, 1779. Sight draft issued by Hopkinson as Treasurer of Loans, in full: "At Thirty Days Sight of this Third Bill, First, Second and Fourth not paid, pay to William Bingham or Order, 600 Hundred Dollars, in five Livres Tournois, for Interest due on Money borrowed by the United States." Crisply with dark bold signatures at the conclusion by Hopkinson, and countersigned by Thomas Smith. In fine condition, with light show-through from writing on the reverse. Accompanied with original engaving.
The sight draft is issued and signed and endorsed on the reverse by William Bingham an important statesman and politician from Pennsylvania, who at the time in 1780 was one of the wealthiest men in the United States.
William Bingham (March 8, 1752 – February 7, 1804) was an American statesman from Philadelphia. He was a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress from 1786 to 1788 and served in the United States Senate from 1795 to 1801. Bingham was one of the wealthiest men in the United States during his lifetime, and was considered to be the richest person in the U.S. in 1780.
