DS, signed "O. Ellsworth," one page 8 x 4, February 17, 1777, Hartford. Written by Thomas Seymour, a pay order to treasurer John Lawrence to pay Eben. Spencer. In part "Pay to Spencer the sum of two hundred fifteen pounds nineteen shillings for purchase of 870.. of saltpeter..."
In very good condition, with expected age and handling wear, a couple of areas of trivial soiling rough right edge.
Oliver Ellsworth (April 29, 1745 – November 26, 1807) was an American lawyer, judge, politician, and diplomat. He was a framer of the United States Constitution, a United States Senator from Connecticut, and the third Chief Justice of the United States. Additionally, Ellsworth received 11 electoral votes in the 1796 presidential election.
