Henry Wells was an American businessman important in the history of both the American Express Company and Wells Fargo & Company.
William George Fargo was a pioneer American expressman who helped found the modern day financial firms of American Express Company and Wells Fargo with his business partner, Henry Wells. He was also the 27th Mayor of Buffalo, serving from 1862 until 1866 during the U.S. Civil War.
This fine 1865 American Express Stock Certificate Signed by Wells and Fargo. 11.625" x 8.25". Made out to a Stuart Morse of Cherry Valley for 2 shares It is signed by both founders of the company and countersigned by Treasurer Alex Holland. The graphics are quite outstanding, with a train, roundhouse, ships, delivery wagon, safe, cotton and crated goods, and a guard dog labeled "Safety & Dispatch." The signatures are clear although they do have the cancellations on them, and a shade or two light, still an attractive stock. Minor age browning,.
Also, a America Merchants Union Stock Certificate signed: "Wm G. Fargo" as President, "E. P. Ross" as Treasurer and "J. N. Knapp" as Secretary. 1p, 12x8½. New York, 1869 February ast. Certificate No. 5989 for 50 shares. The stock Issue of 180,000 shares of Capital Stock; each share was worth $100.Fine condition all signatures bold.
The other included stock is also related and is a Merchants Union Express stock dated 1869 for a Jonathan Hall for 10 shares in fir condition, signatures are a on the light side.
