Thomas J. Rusk (1803–1857) served as a general at the Battle of San Jacinto and as the Republic of Texas’s first secretary of war. He was later a US politician and served as a Senator from Texas from 1846 until his suicide. He served as the President pro tempore of the United States Senate in 1857.Uncommon signature of this Texas Pioneer. James Cooper (May 8, 1810 – March 28, 1863) was an American lawyer, soldier, and politician, who served in the United States Congress.hen the American Civil War started, Cooper raised a brigade of volunteers in Maryland and was appointed brigadier general of volunteers in May 1861. His brigade served in Franz Sigel's division during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Signatures of both on a 1"x 3 1/2" inch piece of paper, in good condition.
