Works, Vol. 1, Knickerbocker's New-York
New York: G.P. Putnam & Co., 1857. Reprint. 8vo. 454 pp. Volume one only. Autograph letter, signed by Irving and dated Feb. 23, 1858 to a Mr. Bolton, "I have requested my publisher to put up a set of my works which I will send as a keepsake to my little godson; hoping its contents may meet with his approbation…yours very truly, Washington Irving," tipped in at front. Original grey cloth, covers worn, joints worn, tear to spine, corners bumped; facsimile Irving signature in ink on mounted paper on front paste-down, text lightly toned, occasional foxing to same.
Presumed letter to Rev. William Jay Bolton (1816-1884), stained glass artist, deacon, family friend and one time neighbor of Irving in Pelham, New York in the late 1830's. The godson mentioned is presumed to be William Henry Bolton, born around 1858-59, during Bolton's second marriage to Margaretta Elizabeth Jones Wilkinson.
