Typed letter signed “Ron” AS PRESIDENT, one page, 7 x 10.5, White House letterhead, December 2, 1986. Letter to his longtime friend Dolores M. Ballachino in Boulder City, Nevada, in Part:

It was good to hear from you to know how much you have come to love the West. I’m a midwesterner (Illinois) but I became a westerner after a short time and know how you feel. I guess the poet Robert W. Service said it when he wrote the line, ‘The land of gold held him as if in a spell.’........ Thank you and Paul for all you did in the effort to get us a Senator. You have every right to be proud because I’m convinced you made the difference in your precinct.

You are right about the media in this Iran thing. I’ve told them the absolute truth and they just won’t accept it. I think, however, we are moving on a couple of fronts that will put out the fire and break up the lynch mob.In fine condition. A fantastic letter in which Reagan refers to the great Western plains with a poem, and the notorious Iran-Contra scandal.

On the very day he signed this letter, Reagan held a meeting in the Cabinet Room, where, according to his Daily Diary: “The President participated in a meeting to discuss investigations into the arms sales to Iran and the role of the National Security Council in the conduct of foreign policy with the Republican Congressional leadership.” That meeting was immediately followed by: “The President made an Address to the Nation announcing the Independent Counsel to investigate the arms sales to Iran. The remarks were broadcast live over nationwide radio and television. ”
