The distinguished British actor had memorable performances in Of Human Bondage (1934), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1935), and The Petrified Forest (1936), but is best remembered as Ashley Wilkes in Gone With the Wind (1939). Four years later, in 1943, while he was flying back to London from a secret mission to Lisbon, Portugal, his plane was shot down by Nazi raiders who wrongly had suspected that Winston Churchill was among its passengers.
