GENE TUNNEY (1898 - 1978) American boxer who defeated Jack Dempsey twice for the heavyweight championship.

Fine content T.L.S. signed "Gene" on the Navy Department letterhead, Aug 28, 1942, to his longtime friend Robert Gros. In part: "...The Sports Writers have certainly been giving me a good going over but I can sympathize with their concern because as the war goes on, from year to year, sports activities will shrink and the work of Sports Writers will practically evaporate. Most of them are good fellows but this does not alter my sincere belief that the promiscuous use of soldiers, sailors and marines for the entertainment of civilians in sports extravaganzas is not helping us win the war...". Boldly signed and in fine condition.

The second TLS is signed "Gene" in black ink and with the Navy Department letterhead, May 14, 1944. The letter has a few handwritten lines of postscript written: "I am off tomorrow for a three week tour of duty in the Caribbean. Keep me advised on my return". In fine condition.
