A Hand written endorsement entirely in Jackson's hand, although not signed. “Dr. England, John. Bishop of Charleston letter to be hand before the sec. of state the copies furnished to the Bishop addressed at Baltimore care of Wm. Barney.” This is a hand written endorsement from Jackson from a sent folded cover from Bishop John England , who was the 1st Bishop at Charleston South Carolina. This is likely the envelope from the letter from Bishop England, which was written on September 26th, 1830. In the letter he points out two situations where he felt that Pope Pius Vll authority and the states where in conflict and it references two situations related to the separation of Church and State. He was very active in the movement of the Catholic Emancipation. He was an early abolitionist, establishing free schools for African American boys and girls in 1831 and created the first distinctively Catholic Newspapers published in the United States, “United States Catholic Miscellany”.
