Rare Julia Ward Howe Signed Photo , with ALS and included a old pamphlet about her famous song Battle Hymn of the Republic

The fine handwritten and signed 3 pg letter dated April 11, 1891.The letter is to Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a close friend. It is a reference to drafting a circular to be printed and created by a committee of five. Howe, says the names that she wants as part of the committee in the letter and asks if he would be willing to be Chairman of the committee.

The rare, signed cabinet photo is 5x7 and the image itself is in good condition. The mount does show some water staining throughout and some damage on the bottom just touching the bottom of the W. in her signature. The signature is light due to the staining and some fading, although clearly visible.

Including a fine program dating from the 1920’s about Howe and her most famous song The Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Julia Ward Howe..Among her many contributions to American society is her famous "Battle Hymn of the Republic," which has become a national anthem of sorts. She was also co-editor and writer for The Woman's Journal, which lobbied for suffrage and human rights. She was instrumental in creating Mother's Day, which she envisioned as a day of solemn council where women from all over the world could meet to discuss the means whereby to achieve world peace. They would also convene as mothers, keeping in mind the duty of protecting their children. She became the first woman elected to the Society of Arts and Letters, and the biography of her, written by her children, won the Pulitzer Prize.

Thomas Wentworth Higginson (December 22, 1823 – May 9, 1911), who went by the name Wentworth,: 52 was an American Unitarian minister, author, abolitionist, politician, and soldier. He was active in abolitionism in the United States during the 1840s and 1850s, identifying himself with disunion and militant abolitionism. He was a member of the Secret Six who supported John Brown. During the Civil War, he served as colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first federally authorized black regiment, from 1862 to 1864. Following the war, he wrote about his experiences with African-American soldiers. He devoted much of the rest of his life to fighting for the rights of freed people, women, and other disfranchised peoples. He is also remembered as a mentor to poet Emily Dickinson.
