Revolutionary War Era Cattle Powder Horn. In very fine condition. Powder horns despite the official use of military cartridge boxes, remained very popular among militia and riflemen. Easily obtainable from slaughtered cattle, the horn was light, strong, watertight, impervious to mold or decay, and would not build up static electricity or strike a spark against metal. First, the inner material was boiled out in water, then the surface was scraped (often thin enough to see the powder level inside), and a wooden stopper inserted in the wide end (after softening in hot water). Plugs were often caulked with beeswax, tallow, or hemp.
Also included is Revolutionary War Original Leather Fire Making Tool w/ Original Fabric and Metal Striking Element
