A fine 3"x5" Iwo Jima Flag raising stamp Promotional Post Card Signed and inscribed "Best regards to my brother elks, John H. Bradely," toned but in fine condition of a United States Navy corpsman (1923–1994) who was one of the men who raised the flag on Iwo Jima's Mount Suribachi. This is an unusual philatelic piece since it was released during the war before the release of the famous stamp commemorating this Pulitzer-winning photo by Joeseph Rosenthal.
Although he was one of the men who raised the first flag on Iwo Jima and was there during the second, it was later found that the person in the famous photo was not him, since there were no photos taken when the first flag was raised on the island. This information did not come out officially until 2016.
John Henry "Jack" "Doc" Bradley (July 10, 1923 – January 11, 1994) was a United States Navy Hospital corpsman who was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Marines during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. During the battle, he was a member of the patrol that captured the top of Mount Suribachi and raised the first U.S. flag on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945.
