Partly-printed DS, one page, December 3, 1787. As governor of Massachusetts, Hancock appoints Dennison Wallis as "First Lieutenant of a Company of Artillery, raised in the Town of Danvers in the eighth Regiment, in the Second Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth, comprehending the County of Essex." Boldly signed on the left side by Hancock, and countersigned by John Avery as secretary. The official seal affixed to the upper left is intact. In fine condition, with light toning and creasing.
John Hancock (January 23, 1737 – October 8, 1793) was an American Founding Father, merchant, statesman, and prominent Patriot of the American Revolution. He served as president of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He is remembered for his large and stylish signature on the United States Declaration of Independence. He also signed the Articles of Confederation and used his influence to ensure that Massachusetts ratified the United States Constitution in 1788.
