Ethan Allen signed May 1773 document selling 17 acres of woodland in Cornwall, Connecticut, inherited from his father, Joseph Allen, to Samuel Whitmore of Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut. Interestingly, for the transaction, Allen lists himself as “of Poultney in Charlotte County and Province of New York.” The town, of course, became part of Vermont and counted Allen’s cousin Ebenezer Allen as one of its founders. Large water stain. Minor edge losses. 11.75" x 7.5". From the Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection.
Ethan Allen (January 21, 1738 – February 12, 1789) was an American farmer, businessman, land speculator, philosopher, writer, lay theologian, American Revolutionary War patriot, and politician. He is best known as one of the founders of Vermont and for the capture of Fort Ticonderoga early in the Revolutionary War. He was captured during the invasion of Quebec in 1775, exchanged in 1778, and given a brevet to Colonel, but did not see field service thereafter. He was heavily involved in the New Hampshire land grants of the 1760s and struggles with New York over the territory lasting into its time as an independent republic starting in 1777 until its statehood in 1791.
