Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Rhode Island and early abolitionist who served as chief justice of the state’s Supreme Court (1727–1820). ALS signed “Wm Ellery Coll,” 2pp, 6.25 x 8, November 12, 1796. With integral address leaf. Signed as Customs Collector of the Port of Newport to Ray Greene [as Attorney General of Rhode Island], "A libel has been drawn agst the Ship Betsy..." signed, "Wm. Ellery." Lightly toned, small paper wound from excision of seal, but not affecting manuscript, lightly creased, a few negligible paper separations, light vertical crease touching the signature's first letter.Framed.
