James Clinton ALS, 10 Sept. 1795, an affecting letter from Little Britain notifying the recipient that Mrs. Clinton has remitting fever and “is very weak so that I have no home of her recovery.” He fears a letter sent to her brother, Dr. Dewitt, has not reached him or that he thinks she is not as bad as she is, and asks him to go immediately to Dr. Dewitt and deliver this letter . He sent the letter with his slave and says in the last line "go immediately with this letter to Doct' DeWitt and let my Negro Boy Return". Mrs. Clinton died Sept. 12, 1795, just two days after this letter. 7.75" x 12.5" when opened. In fine condition., repaired tears and tape stains. From the Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection.
James Clinton (August 9, 1736 – September 22, 1812) was an American Revolutionary War officer and the brother and father of Governors of New York. He was an officer in the New York Provincials in the French and Indian War and reached the rank of colonel and brigadier general in the Revolutionary War. He was wounded in the fighting for Forts Clinton and Montgomery in 1777 and commanded one of the contingents in the Sullivan-Clinton campaign of 1779. He served in the New York legislature and senate after the war.
