Meir, Golda (1898-1978). Prime Minister of Israel (1969-1973). PS, 7 x 5 in. The photograph is of Meir and other politicians standing in what appears to be an airport. The photo is signed by Golda Meir the West German chancellor Willy Brandt and one other unidentified leader, Photo most likely taken in 1973. Meir was born in Kiev, Russia, but immigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She became an active Zionist and moved to Israel. An active politician, she worked for the Israeli government in various roles including as Minister of Labor and Foreign Minister. In 1969, party factions appointed her as the country’s fourth Prime Minister, making her the third woman in the world to obtain that office. She died in Jerusalem on December 8, 1978. Willy Brandt (18 December 1913 – 8 October 1992) was a German statesman and politician, who was leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) from 1964 to 1987 and served as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) from 1969 to 1974. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971 for his efforts to strengthen cooperation in western Europe through the EEC and to achieve reconciliation between West Germany and the countries of Eastern Europe.He was the first Social Democrat chancellor since 1930.
