ARTHUR, Chester A. (1830-1886). President U.S. Vice President under Garfield, whom he succeeded on the later's assassination. ALS, 2pp. 8vo, Quartermaster General's Dept., New York State, N.Y., Dec. 13, 1862.
To General Hillhouse. Arthur, at this time holding the rank of Brigadier General, writes:"ln case Major Price should resume his Comn. in the 74th Regt. I know just
the man for the command of the 14Sth (Allen's) & one whom I would 1ike vastly to have appointed. I take the liberty of saying this, from the fact that the Governor asked me, \•men we were discussing this matter in Albany, to name a man for the place, if I could think of one. If the necessity should arise of appointing some other than Major Price, please advise me before making any appt that I may present the claims & qualifications of my candidate."
