Katharine Lee Bates best known for the lyrics to the iconic patriotic song ‘America the Beautiful.’Very Rare Handwritten first Stanza of "America" and Desirable printed lyrics to ‘America the Beautiful,’ one page, 5 x 6, neatly signed and inscribed on top in black ink, “ With Greetings to S. D. Green, Katharine Lee Bates.” below she actually wrote the well known stanza "America! America! / God shed his grace on thee / And crown thy good with brotherhood / From sea to shining sea!.”In excellent condition. Bates' patriotic song was a strong contender to become the country's national anthem but Congress, in its infinite wisdom, gave the nod to the "Star-Spangled Banner" in 1931. Of note, too, is that Bates never sought royalties for the poem's publication or the song's performance.
