Twice signed check, 7.5" x 2.5", Chicago, May 7, 1878, made payable to "P.H. Sheridan bearer" and signed again, "P.H. Sheridan", as payer, in the amount of $50. Not endorsed on verso. Bank cancellation cuts touch the signature of the payee. Small hole in the bottom right-hand corner, not affecting the signature of the payer. In fine condition.
Nicknamed "Little Phil" he was a United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. Early in the war, he distinguished himself at Perryville and Stones River. In the Chattanooga campaign, he broke through the line and almost captured Braxton Bragg. He raided Richmond, where J. E.B. Stuart was killed and had victories in the Shenandoah Valley campaign. He beat Pickett at Five Forks and was instrumental in forcing the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox. His career was noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with General-in-chief Ulysses S. Grant.
